Citation:  1.) The Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism while participating in aerial flight as a forward air controller in Southeast Asia on 18 and 19 November 1968. On these dates, he flew in an unarmed observation aircraft to assist in the rescue effort of a downed pilot. Flying through intense anti-aircraft fire with disregard for his own personal safety, he successfully completed his mission which led to the rescue of the downed pilot. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Captain Sheward relfect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
