Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain John H. Boles for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an F-100F Forward Air Controller over Southeast Asia on 3 February 1969. On that date, Captain Boles was on a low altitude visual reconnaissance mission when his aircraft was struck by several rounds of anti aircraft fire. The controls in the front cockpit were destroyed and Captain Boles took control of the aircraft in the rear cockpit. Faced with unknown battle damage, restricted visibility, and a strange recovery base Captain Boles maneuvered the aircraft to a safe landing without further damage to the aircraft. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Boles reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

2.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain John H. Boles for heroism while participating in aerial flight as an F-100F Forward Air Controller over Southeast Asia on 16 April 1969. On that date, Captain Boles displayed outstanding aerial competence and courageous professionalism in the aggressive pursuance and acquisition of the assigned targets. The tenacity of this officer to attain the objective against formidable defenses is in accord with the highest military objectives. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Captain Boles reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
