CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT:  Vietnam

Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain John S. Sherman for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a B-52 Radar Navigator over Southeast Asia on 15 December 1972. On that date, while directing his aircraft through an area of intense thunderstorms, and while nearing the target area, Captain Sherman experienced several malfunctions of his bombing and navigation systems. Despite the severely degraded capability of his aircraft, Captain Sherman was able to continue the bomb-run, resolve the conflicts, and insure a successful delivery on the assigned target within critical time limits. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Sherman reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
