Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Kenneth C. Shanley, Warrant Officer WO1, United States Army, Company D, 228th Aviation Battalion (Assault Support Helicopter) (Airmobile) Republic of Vietnam, for action dated 23 May 1970 for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Warrant Officer Shanley distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 23 May 1970, in the Republic of Vietnam. When a sister ship came under hostile fire, and received a direct hit, he elected to extract the crew while the airfield was still under heavy fire. He flew in to rescue the pilots and crew of the downed craft. His outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
