Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Charles S. Bogle, First Lieutenant, Infantry, United States Army, 501st Aslt Hel Co, 145th Avn Bn, for exceptionally valorous actions on 26 June 1966 while serving as pilot of an armed helicopter during a mission to reconnoiter and pre-strike a landing zone in support of a combat mission near Cu Chi, Republic of Vietnam. On the initial low level pass over the area, First Lieutenant Bogle’s aircraft received intense Viet Cong fire from a village adjacent to the proposed landing zone. Despite the hostile fire, First Lieutenant Bogle pressed his attack and placed accurate grenade fire on the insurgent force. Since continuous ground fire was directed at his aircraft from all quadrants, the aircraft commander flew over the Viet Cong positions while First Lieutenant Bogle effectively engaged the targets below. Although his aircraft was hit several times, First Lieutenant Bogle continued his attack until his ammunition was expended. Through his courage and determination, he greatly boosted the morale of the friendly ground troops and. contributed immeasurably to the defeat of the Viet Cong force. First Lieutenant Bogle's outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect. great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
