Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Ensign William G. Shackelford for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight against enemy forces. On 11 June 1944 in the Marianas, when his division encountered enemy air resistance, he assisted his section leader in shooting down one enemy plane and probably accounting for another. On 19 June 1944 his division encountered a large enemy force attempting an attack on our fleet. He assisted in shooting down one torpedo bomber. His division accounted for five. On 24 September 1944 in attack on Panay, Philippine Islands, he assisted in sinking eight large fuel-loaded barges and assisted in destroying four fighter-type aircraft on the ground. His courage and skill were at all times inspiring and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
