Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lawrence R. Retta, Captain, Field Artillery, United States Army, 116th Aviation Company (Assault Helicopter), Republic of Vietnam, for action dated 8 January 1970, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty: Captain Retta distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as aircraft commander of a command and control helicopter when he received a call from a reconnaissance team in heavy contact deep in enemy held territory. Realizing helicopter gunships were not available for at least fifteen minutes; he immediately flew his helicopter low level, permitting his door gunners and the command control party to provide aerial fire power to the greatly outnumbered friendly forces. Although constantly receiving a heavy volume of enemy ground fire; he maneuvered his helicopter skillfully among many large trees, permitting effective fire to be placed on the enemy, resulting in three enemy soldiers killed by the command and control helicopter. As a result of this action; eight enemy soldiers were killed, and numerous supplies were captured. Captain Retta’s bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty were exemplary. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
