Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer One Byron W. Bode for heroism while participating in aerial flight as evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Warrant Officer Bode distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 3 December 1968, while serving as Pilot of a UH-1B helicopter during a combat assault near Loc Ninh, Republic of Vietnam. As his helicopter was leaving an unsecure landing zone, his helicopter came under intense hostile ground fire. Although his aircraft was damaged, Warrant Officer Bode maneuvered his helicopter through the enemy fire into a position to lend supporting fire to the ground unit. With complete disregard for his own safety, Warrant Officer Bode landed in the contact area on numerous occasions to deliver supplies and evacuate the casualties. During the long battle Warrant Officer Bode also flew at low altitudes to locate the enemy position and direct supporting fire on the insurgents. His outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
