Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Second Lieutenant James A. Schofield for extraordinary achievement in aerial flight. Lieutenant Schofield distinguished himself as Pilot of fighter type aircraft during the period from 13 January 1945 to 16 June 1945, while completing fifty combat missions from bases in China. Although fire from enemy aircraft and hostile ground installations was encountered on numerous occasions, he carried out his missions with aggressive determination. He in support of credited with inflicting heavy losses on the enemy in attacks against installations, troop and supply concentrations and communication centers. Included in his flights was dive bombing, strafing, bomber escort and interception missions. The accomplishments of Lieutenant Schofield reflect credit upon their personal records and upon the Army Air Forces.
