Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Douglas Schneeman for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. Major Schneeman distinguished himself by exceptionally meritorious achievement while serving as Detachment Commander, Operation Prize Crew II Detachment. He was assigned to determine the feasibility of using the Quiet Airplane as a night surveillance/reconnaissance vehicle. The experimental nature of the aircraft, its very early stage of development and lack of maneuverability and instrumentation, coupled with the concept of employment at night made every mission hazardous. The aircraft was unarmed and provided no protection to the Pilot from enemy small-arms fire. On numerous occasions, Major Schneeman detected targets and courageously remained over the hostile sighting to direct friendly artillery fires on the enemy. On each occasion, his fearless mission performance produced timely and valuable intelligence information and proved the validity of the Quiet Airplane concept by detecting and engaging targets which would have otherwise gone undetected. He used his past combat flying experience together with the extensive mission experience gained from the QT-2 airplane to lay the foundation for tactics and techniques to be used with future Quiet Aircraft. His recommendations for improvements in the design and capabilities of future Quiet Aircraft have contributed immeasurably to the pioneer field of covert night surveillance of the battlefield. His actions were in keeping with the highest military traditions and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
