Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Norman J. Schmit for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight. On 15 March 1945, Lieutenant Schmit, serving as Lead Bombardier in a mission against the communication center in the area of Neunkirchen, Germany, exhibited exceptional aerial skill and leadership. The formation approached the target area under extremely adverse weather conditions, flying at low level where the danger from intense anti-aircraft fire was great. Despite these hazards, Lieutenant Schmit, displaying outstanding courage and aggressiveness directed a series of brilliant attacks which inflicted extensive damage upon the enemy and destroyed the vital communication system. His actions on this occasion are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Army Air Force.
