Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Colonel John T. Schiffer for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a B-57 Navigator-Bombardier in Southeast Asia on 15 December 1967. On that date, Colonel Schiffer conducted a highly successful night interdiction mission against a hostile supply route being used to transport supplies across the border into South Vietnam. Disregarding his own safety, Colonel Schiffer made repeated attacks in the face of intense ground fire and adverse weather to destroy a convoy of trucks and an active anti-aircraft gun position. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Colonel Schiffer reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
