Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Anthony E. Schiavi for heroism while participating in aerial flight, as number two of a four-ship. in Iraq on 26 January 1991 approximately 180 nautical miles west of Baghdad. On that date, the four-ship of F-15C aircraft were tasked to provide protection for the Airborne Warning and Control E-3 aircraft. Airborne Warning and Control Squadron soon committed Captain Schiavi's flight on two Mig-23 fighters taking off from H-2 airfield in western Iraq and heading for Baghdad to the east. The F-15s were unable to overtake these targets from their starting position in south central Iraq. However, a second group of enemy aircraft departed H-2 airfield and Captain Schiavi turned to the west to meet them. Airborne Warning and Control Squadron and his own onboard systems indicated that at least four Mig-23s were in this enemy flight. One of the targets broke formation to escape the F-15 flight. The flight leader directed that the remaining three enemy fighters be targeted by himself, Captain Schiavi and number three F-15. Each of the three Migs were destroyed. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Captain Schiavi reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
