Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Chief Warrant Officer John T. Schey, Jr., for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam on 19 April 1970. Chief Warrant Officer Schey distinguisehd himself while serving as aircraft comander of a UH-1H medical evacuation helicopter during a night emergency rescue mission near Camp Evans, Republic of Vietnam. Reaching the extraction site, Chief Warrant Officer Schey realized that illumination would be necessary to extract wounded personnel from the unsecured area. After adjusting illumination over the area, he successfully loaded his aircraft despite hostile fire and flew to a medical facility. Returniing to the contact area after refueling, he again came under hostile fire but proceeded to successfully extract the remaining injured soldiers and complete the mission. Chief Warrant Officer Schey's personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
