Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to David Saunders, Warrant Officer, WO1, United States Army, 162nd Helicopter Assault Company, 214th Combat Aviation Battalion, Republic of Vietnam, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of 'Vietnam: Warrant Officer Saunders distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 20 February 1969 while serving as an Aircraft Commander with the 162d Helicopter Assault Company, on a reconnaissance in force mission in Kien Hoa Province. Disregarding his own safety, Warrant Officer Saunders volunteered to fly his craft into a heavily embattled area to resupply elements of the 2d Brigade with much needed ammunition. As he approached the area, his craft came under intense automatic weapons fire and he was forced to abort the mission. His craft had taken several hits and was losing fuel. Undaunted, Warrant Officer Saunders tried again to land his craft and again was met by such intense fire and was forced to withdraw. Knowing the resupply was essential, warrant Officer Saunders courageously took his craft in for the third time and under intense fire successfully resupplied the ground troops. Warrant Officer Saunders' outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division and the United States Army.
