The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Gordon O. Sauerbrun for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of a C-7A aircraft at Kontum, Special Forces Camp, Republic of Vietnam on 1 April 1971. On that date, Captain Sauerbrun made a successful tactical approach and during the offload the camp came under mor.tar attack. The offload was accomplished and Captain Sauerbrun made a safe tactical departure of the field employing evasive maneuvers while checking the engine instruments for possible engine or system damage and maintaining close crew coordination through a successful landing at the nearest airfield. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Sauerbrun reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross (First Oak Leaf Cluster) to Captain Gordon A. Sauerbrun for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an Aircraft Commander, B-52 Aircraft, 43rd Strategic Wing, Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, in support of Southeast Asia, on 8 January 1973. On that date, Captain Sauerbrun flew in a cell of B-52's targeted against a high priority target in North Vietnam. Despite direct attack from numerous heavy antiaircraft artillery positions and several aircraft equipment malfunctions, he was able to perform his duties and place the ordnance on target. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Sauerbrun reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
