Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Thomas R. Sammons, 409th Bombardment Group (L), for extraordinary achievement in aerial flight. During a bombing mission in conjunction with Allied ground forces, on 27 August 1944, Lieutenant Sammons displayed outstanding leadership. Bombing of the enemy installations involved accurate timing without destruction to nearby Allied troops and before the enemy could firmly fortify itself. Weather conditions were unfavorable and anti-aircraft fire heavy, but Lieutenant Sammons, undeterred, led his formation in a brilliant attack which destroyed the target and made possible an immediate advance of Allied ground forces. Lieutenant Sammons’ devotion to duty and aerial proficiency reflect great credit upon himself and his organization.
