Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Francis J. Sama for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam on 31 December 1969. Captain Sama distinguished himself while serving as aircraft commander on an AH-1G helicopter gunship durng a visual reconnaissance mission in the A Shau Valley, Republic of Vietnam when a light observation helicopter came under automatic weapons fire from a bunker complex. Captain Sama immediately engaged the position and leveled accurate suppressive fire to cover the observation helicopter's withdrawal. Even though Captain Sama received heavy automatic weapons fire, he continued to engage the insurgents to keep them pinned down until tactical air support arrived. His maneuvering ability and skillful placement of suppressive fire, resulted in the destruction of the bunker complex. Captain Sama's personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
