Citation: 1.)
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Edward G. Ryan, Chief Warrant Officer W2, United States Army, Troop A, 3rd Armored Squadron, 17th Air Cav, Republic of Vietnam, for action dated 16 February 1970 for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty: Chief Warrant Officer Ryan distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as an armed helicopter fire team leader in support of ground forces conducting a search and clear operation near Kien Long. Heavily fortified enemy positions had been discovered and he immediately engaged the enemy positions with deadly aerial rocket fire. Flying his aircraft at extremely low altitude, he used the surrounding terrain to screen the ship form the enemy gunsights. During his attacks he was notified that the enemy had setup a heavy machinegun position and was threatening the supporting aircraft. With complete disregard for his own safety, he voluntarily accepted the task of silencing the enemy gun. After repeated attacks into the intense fire, he succeeded in destroying the enemy position. Chief Warrant Officer Ryan’s outstanding flying ability and courage under hostile fire was instrumental in the success of the mission. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
