Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Sergeant Daniel J. Rothfeld for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight on operational flight missions from 22 October to 1 November 1943 in the Southwest Pacific area. During this period, Sergeant Rothfeld participated in sustained operational activity against the enemy during which hostile contact was probable and expected. Supplies were dropped and troops transported to advanced positions. These flights involved flying at low altitudes over mountainous terrain under adverse weather conditions in an unarmed transport airplane and often necessitated landing within a few miles of enemy bases. Throughout these operations, outstanding courage and devotion to duty were displayed.
