Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Flight Officer Sanford A. Ross, 366th Fighter Group, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight against the enemy on 1 December 1944. When the formation of fighter aircraft in which he was flying encountered a number of hostile aircraft, Flight Officer Ross demonstrated outstanding aerial proficiency and tactical technique in vigorously pressing home his attacks upon the enemy. In the course of the running engagement he displayed unusual courage and skill when, coming to the assistance of his flight leader who was being attacked by two ME-109’s, he succeeded in destroying one and driving away the other. The outstanding airmanship and devotion to duty which Flight Officer Ross exhibited on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and his organization.
