Citation:  1.) The Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. Captain Rose distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Aircraft Commander/Air Mission Commander on an operation near Kien Long. He spotted numerous enemy running down a canal line, and took his aircraft down to engage the enemy until gunships could arrive on station. He continued to circle the area and pin down the enemy. He then put troops on the ground and guided them to the enemy company. At this time the ground troops came under an intense round of enemy automatic weapons fire and received two dead and numerous wounded personnel. Realizing that a medevac ship was thirty minutes away, Captain Rose descended to extract critically wounded troops. While attempting to lead his aircraft, he took numerous hits from enemy automatic weapons positions, but he continued down to extract the stricken troops. After the medevac operation was completed, he returned to the area of operation and guided scout ships and ground troops to the enemy positions. With the enemy force decimated and darkness being near he extracted the friendly troops. His leadership and flying skill enabled him to safely evade enemy fire numerous times and continue to lead the troops on the ground to enemy positions. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
