Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Floyd J. Rodmyre, First Lieutenant, Air Corps, 31st Fighter Group for heroism while participating in aerial flight as pilot of a Spitfire type aircraft. On 28 January 1944, while flying on patrol over the beachhead near Anzio, Italy, Lieutenant Rodmyre observed one FW-190 approaching friendly territory. Despite an intense barrage of friendly anti-aircraft fire, Lieutenant Rodmyre skillfully maintained his position to give protection to his element leader as his leader dived upon the enemy. Then he sighted three ME-109's preparing to attack his comrade, Lieutenant Rodmyre immediate turned to intercept and despite the great odds displayed superior tactical skill as he outfought the three enemy fighters and forced them from the battle area. His selfless courage saved his leader from imminent destruction and enabled his leader to shoot down the FW-190. Although he was painfully wounded and his plane heavily damaged by enemy fire, Lieutenant Rodmyre returned the crippled airplane safely to base. His unfailing devotion to duty and outstanding proficiency as a combat pilot reflect great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
