Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Joseph P. Robertson for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action, above and beyond the call of duty. Captain Robertson distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Pilot of a heavy lift helicopter during a night recovery of a downed gunship near Phu Cat. A first attempt into the area of the downed aircraft was unsuccessful due to intense enemy ground fire. But on his second attempt, despite marginal weather, mountainous terrain, darkness, and enemy ground fire, Captain Robertson maneuvered the ship into the area and completed the hook-up in a minimum of time. Then, with the Aircraft Commander at the controls, a safe departure was accomplished with Captain Robertson acting as an Observer keeping the aircraft clear of the enemy ground fire. Through his courage and sound judgement, he contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission. His actions are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
