CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT: Vietnam
MODEL: UC-123B
Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Staff Sergeant Eugene S. Robertson for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a UC-123B (Defoliation) Flight Engineer near Dong Ha, Republic of Vietnam, on 7 May 1967. On that date, Sergeant Robertson was flying in the lead aircraft of a three-ship formation which encountered intense automatic weapons fire while spraying a vital target. Multiple hits were sustained which damaged the electrical, hydraulic and emergency brake systems. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Sergeant Robertson left the protection of his armored spray control box to assess the damage and advise the Pilot of the aircraft condition. The aircraft made a successful emergency landing at the Da Nang Air Base, but due to heavy battle damage, had to be towed from the runway. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Robertson reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
