Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Sergeant James R. Richardson for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight with Marine Scout Bombing Squadron 231 from 22 to 29 August 1944. In the successful completion of these missions, Sergeant Richardson contributed materially to the success of United States efforts. By his undaunted courage, superb airmanship, and unyielding devotion to duty in the face of hazardous flying conditions, Sergeant Richardson reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
