Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS to Lieutenant Commander Andrew T. Bishop, United States Navy, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as Mission Commander and Pilot of an HH-60H aircraft assigned to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron EIGHT FOUR, Detachment ONE, Combined Joint Special Operations Air Component deployed with Commander, United States FIFTH Fleet in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM on 28 December 2006. Lieutenant Commander Bishop assumed responsibility as Air Mission Commander after the lead aircraft's tail gunner was critically wounded and evacuated for treatment. With one-third of the assault force inserted in hostile territory, the remaining team returning to base, and no communications with the ground force, he inserted his reaction force to reinforce them, despite his aircraft taking enemy fire. While dangerously exposed, Lieutenant Commander Bishop coordinated recovery of the ground force with the remaining air elements. On exfiltration, Lieutenant Commander Bishop stretched the performance limits of his overloaded aircraft, expertly nursing the aircraft safely clear of all obstacles and enemy positions. Additionally, his timely decision-making and exceptional situational awareness saved the lives of 25 troops and culminated in a successful mission execution with the capture of two high value targets. By his superb airmanship, inspiring courage, and loyal devotion to duty in the face of hazardous flying conditions, Lieutenant Commander Bishop reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
