Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Steven L. Reagles, First Lieutenant, Armor, United States Army, Troop C, 7th Armored Squadron, 1st Air Cavalry, Republic of Vietnam, for action dated 4 November 1969 for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty: First Lieutenant Reagles distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as aircraft commander of a transport helicopter in support of friendly forces near That Son. First Lieutenant Reagles’ unit was called out to airlift reinforcements to an outpost under attack at the base of a mountain. An estimated 100 man enemy force was attacking from the slopes above the outpost. He participated in two troop insertions, under intense fire, into the landing zone. Despite the hazards to his own safety he voluntarily exposed himself to hostile automatic weapons fire to reinforce the embattled outpost. During the second insertion, his ship sustained disabling hits. He courageously continued his mission electing to land his ship in a safe area only after having completed the insertion. His composure and courage under fire were instrumental in the successful defense of the outpost and the saving of many allied lives. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
