Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Gerald L. Purcell, 68th Aviation Company (Assault Helicopter) for heroism while participating in aerial flight, evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam on 13 August 1970: Captain Purcell distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as aircraft and mission commander aboard a command and control aircraft during a rescue operation in Tay Ninh Province. While ground troops of an Allied Division were moving to the pick up zone, they came under heavy fire resulting in numerous casualties. Without regard for his own personal safety, Captain Purcell immediately maneuvered his ship into the area and began extracting wounded personnel. With the remaining ground crew and his crew supplying suppressive fire, he flew out of the contact site. Enroute to the nearest medical facilities, he directed emergency first aid to the wounded and was responsible for saving the lives of approximately 16 persons, one of which was being given mouth to mouth resuscitation. His outstanding flying ability and conscientious devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
