AWARDED DFC:

CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT: Vietnam
MODEL: KC-135
Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Senior Master Sergeant Robert L. Powers, Sr., for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Boom Operator, KC-135, 307th Strategic Wing, Strategic Air Command, at U-Tapao Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, on 12 May 1972. On that date, Sergeant Powers, in a highly professional manner, assisted in the recovery of two F-4's that were sent to the north to bomb Hanoi. The KC-135 went to the extreme limits to intercept the F-4's which were returning from their Hanoi targets. With limited refueling capabilities, Sergeant Powers was able to refuel the F-4's to allow sufficient fuel for a safe recovery. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Powers reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
