Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to 1st Lt Leonard V. Porter, Jr., for extraordinary heroism in aerial flight, while participating in aerial operations against the enemy, on 15 October 1944. Before reaching the target, the lead plane had to return to the base because of an engine failure and Lt Porter being the senior pilot in the formation assumed command of the formation and successfully led the Squadron over the target. Despite the enemy fighter interceptors and heavy and accurate anti-aircraft fire encountered, the squadron was able to get 100% hits in the target area. Throughout this mission, Lt Porter displayed high professional skill and devotion to duty which exemplifies the highest traditions of the Army Air Forces.
