Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Robert C. Poland for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action, above and beyond the call of duty. Captain Poland distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Aircraft Commander of an armed helicopter conducting a reconnaissance of a proposed landing zone near Soc Trang. As he entered the area of operations, he observed several personnel running through a tree line toward a bunker and then came under intensive automatic weapons fire from the entire area. He ordered his doorgunner to provide suppressive fire and flew through the enemy fire to destroy a reinforced bunker with his rockets. After expending his rockets, he attacked the enemy with door gun suppression only, braving the still violent ground fire in order to further demoralize the enemy and draw their fire from the rapidly approaching lift helicopters. When the friendly troops arrived, they met little resistance from the stunned enemy, and they completed the destruction begun by Captain Poland. His outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty completely devastated the enemy force and prevented certain losses of allied troops. His actions are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
