Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Thomas R. Poe for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in support of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam troops in Laos. Captain Poe distinguished himself on 13 February 1971 while serving as Flight Platoon Leader aboard a CH47 cargo helicopter during an emergency resupply mission in Laos. Captain Poe volunteered to deliver vitally needed ammunition to a besieged firebase. Although under constant anti-aircraft fire from numerous enemy positions while enroute to the firebase, he continued his mission. As he began his descent onto the landing zone, he came under an intense mortar barrage. Skillfully maneuvering his aircraft, Captain Poe successfully unloaded the vital supplies. His actions were instrumental in enabling the ground element to repel the enemy assault. Captain Poe's outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
