CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT: Vietnam
MODEL: AH-1G
Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Daniel J. Petrosky, Captain, Air Defense Artillery, Battery C, 4th Battalion (Aerial Rocket Artillery), 77th Artillery, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam on 18 July 1969. Captain Petrosky distinguished himself while serving as pilot of an AH-1G helicopter in the A Shau Valley, Republic of Vietnam. Captain Petrosky observed two lift helicopters being subjected to intense enemy automatic weapons and rocket propelled grenade fire, causing the assault to be disrupted and stranding a small group of soldiers in the hostile landing zone. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Captain Petrosky began attacking the enemy positions around the landing zone. To provide safe, effective fire, he had to fly at a very low level and he was subjected to automatic weapons and rocket propelled grenade fire. After expending his rockets, he hovered his aircraft directly over the friendly force, allowing his crew chief to deliver machine gun fire directly on the enemy positions. When all of his ammunition was expended, he continued to make attacks against the enemy positions, diverting their attention from the ground unit until another group of helicopters could arrive on station to relieve him. His courageous actions saved the lives of the troops on the ground and contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission. Captain Petrosky’s outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
