Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Robert G. Parke Jr, 116th Aviation Company (Assault Helicopter), Republic of Vietnam, for action dated 15 September 1970 for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty: First Lieutenant Parke distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as the air mission control in a troop insertion near Hawk Hill. Prior to the troop insertion he and a light fire team conducted a visual reconnaissance of the area and came under intense enemy small arms and light automatic weapons fire. The supported ground commander was informed of the situation and taken on a visual reconnaissance of the area. At this time the troop carrying aircraft and the light fire team were summoned to make the troop insertion. Despite heavy fire received by the troop carrying aircraft and light fire team, Lieutenant Parke skillfully directed three insertions into enemy infested areas. After the insertions were completed the ground troops became somewhat confused so Lieutenant Parke then landed to allow the supported unit commander to help direct his troops. Throughout the entire action Lieutenant Parke skillfully directed the lift aircraft and gunships and was instrumental in the success of the mission. His outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United states Army.
