Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Alva A. Owen, Warrant Officer W1, United States Army, 155th Aslt Hel Co., Republic of Vietnam, for action dated 23 September 1968 for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty: Warrant Officer Owen distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as aircraft commander of a UH-1H helicopter near Duc Lap. Flying an infantry insertion mission in the second ship in a flight of six, he observed the lead ship come under heavy ground fire and go down in flames. Unmindful of the devastating fire, he continued his approach, and shortly began receiving intense enemy fire. Quickly unloading the soldiers, he flew his bullet riddled ship to the airfield where he obtained another aircraft. Returning to the battle area, he learned of the need for evacuation of wounded personnel from the area and immediately volunteered for the mission. Darkness had settled in the area and he brought his ship in under heavy enemy fire and landed. With the wounded soldiers hurriedly loaded aboard, Warrant Officer Owen lifted from the area and returned his passengers to safety. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
