Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Gary M. Orr for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Orr distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 9 June 1969 while serving with Company B, 229th Aviation Battalion (Assault Helicopter) (Airmobile) near Tay Xinh, Republic of Vietnam. Upon discovering that the ground unable to read had sustained severe casualties from heavy automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades fire, First Lieutenant Orr returned to evacuate the wounded. Despite the intense enemy fire and with complete disregard for his own safety, he landed his aircraft and waited for the injured to be loaded. Though heavily overloaded, First Lieutenant Orr quickly maneuvered his ship through the hail of hostile fire. His outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
