CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT:  Vietnam
MODEL:  C-7

Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Chief Warrant Officer (W-2) Thomas B. Berrien, United States Army, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a C-7A Aircraft Commander near Phu Cat, Republic of Vietnam on 4 January 1967. On that date, Warrant Officer Berrien was called out on an emergency medical evacuation in such severe weather that medical evacuation helicopters were unable to fly. Immediate evacuation of a seriously wounded friendly soldier was essential for his life to be saved. Warrant Officer Berrien maneuvered his aircraft through driving rain and extreme turbulence caused by gale force winds to a successful landing at Landing Zone Hammond that would have been impossible for a pilot with less courage, determination and skill. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Warrant Officer Berrien reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
