The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Master Sergeant Russell E. Olsen for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight on 1 June 1945. The individuals in this mission were combat crew members of the lead aircraft of a B-29 Squadron taking part in an incendiary attack against the city of Osaka, Japan. On the way to the target from their island base in the Marianas, unexpected cloud fronts were encountered which dispersed some aircraft but, they kept the greater part of the Squadron intact. Intense and accurate anti-aircraft fire was met and enemy fighters pressed savage attacks. In the target area small clouds rose to 27,000 feet, obscuring the entire target except for a small break. By making a quick decision they immediately changed instruments and figures and dropped their bombs in the open area. This immediate change resulted in the destruction of an entire shipyard along the river front. The determination of these individuals to bomb the enemy in spite of adverse weather conditions and enemy opposition, together with their outstanding professional skill reflect great credit on themselves and the Army Air Force.
