Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Christopher J. Oelerich, Warrant Officer W1, United States Army, Troop B, 7th Armored Squadron, 17th Air Cavalry, Republic of Vietnam, for action dated 29 October 1969 for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty: Warrant Officer Oelerich distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as pilot on a light observation helicopter team conducting reconnaissance of an enemy force attempting to overrun a small allied firebase in the Central Highlands. He tracked several of the enemy to their concealed positions where he marked them for strikes by gunships. When his team leader’s aircraft was badly damaged by enemy fire, he escorted the damaged aircraft back to camp and then returned to resume locating and marking enemy targets. As he continued his reconnaissance he observed two enemy soldiers firing rockets at allied soldiers defending the perimeter of the firebase. He maneuvered his aircraft into position where his observer killed both enemy with a burst of machinegun fire. His continued efforts delayed the enemy's advance and enabled gunships and tactical fighters to inflict heavy damage and casualties against enemy equipment and soldiers. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
