Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Specialist Four Timothy W. O'Connor for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action, above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Four O'Connor distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 29 January 1971 in the Republic of Vietnam. During an urgent logging mission, a light reconnaissance aircraft near Specialist Four O'Connor's aircraft was shot down. Realizing the urgency of extracting the crew immediately, Specialist Four O'Connor's airship commander maneuvered the aircraft into the intense fire zone. Despite the heavy enemy fire, Specialist Four O'Connor continued to lay down heavy suppressive fire on the enemy locations. His courageous efforts were instrumental in the successful extraction of the crew. Specialist Four O'Connor's outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army
