CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT:  WWII
MODEL:  B-29

Citation:  1.) The Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in the aerial flight during aggressive bombardment of the coal liquefaction plant at Ube, Japan 5 August 1945. As Airplane Commander of a B-29 aircraft, First Lieutent Nispel performed his mission of a precision bombing attack from a base in the Marianas Islands against the target on Honshu. Flying at night, with a heavy bomb load and with close airplane compressibility over the target at less than one-minute intervals he showed exceptional ability in reaching the target and dropping over fifty percent of his bombs within 1000 feet of the main point of impact. As a result of this strike the target was destroyed, so much so that a great part of it was under water. During this raid the B-29 aircraft was over the home islands of Japan for 200 nautical miles from landfall to land's end. The cool determination and high degree of skill he displayed, resulting in the successful accomplishment of the mission, reflects great credit on himself and the Army Air Force.
