Citation:  1.) The Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. Captain Niles distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as the pilot of a command and control helicopter, in support of the 199th Light Infantry Brigade, ten miles west of Saigon. When one of the supporting gunships experienced engine trouble and was observed making a forced landing in an unsecured landing zone, he immediatley flew to the area and saw that the crew was moving from the aircraft. As he was flying down to rescue the men, an unknown size enemy force opened fire, killing the two downed pilots. Realizing that any further delay could result in the deaths of the remaining men, Captain Niles coordinated his ship's fire with that of the supporting gunships and maneuvered into the dangerous landing zone. Covering the withdrawal of the men with his aircraft's weapons and the support of the hovering gunships, he continued the suppressive fire until the evacuation process was completed. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
