Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Sergeant Thomas P. Niedhammer for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a B-52G Fire Control Operator near Luang Tri, South Vietnam on 4 November 1972. On that date, while under the threat of imminent surface-to-air missile attack, Sergeant Niedhammer directed the trailing aircraft on an emergency bomb run. Through his skilled performance, that aircraft released all its ordnance precisely on the assigned target. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Niedhammer reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
