Citation:  1.) The DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS Under the provisions of Army Regulation 600-45, 22 September 1943, and pursuant to authority contained in letter 200.6 Headquarters Eight Air Force, dated 4 August 1944, Subject: Awards and Decorations, the DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS is awarded to the following named Officer: RICHARD A. NELMS, O-818731, 1st Lieutenant, Army Air Forces, United States Army. For extraordinary achievement while serving as pilot on many high altitude heavy bombardment missions over Germany and German occupied Continental Europe. Under the duress of heavy fighter attacks, anti-aircraft, and often under adverse weather conditions, Lieutenant Nelms, by his superior airmanship, contributed to the success of all of these operations. The untiring effort, skill and determination under stress of combat displayed by Lieutenant Nelms are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Army Air Forces of the United States.
