Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Michael F. Murrell for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a C-7A Aircraft Commander at Duong Dong Airfield, Republic of Vietnam on 9 September 1971. On that date, Lieutenant Murrell was called upon to evacuate three seriously and one critically wounded soldiers from Duong Dong. Lieutenant Murrell successfully evacuated the wounded despite hazardous terrain and heavy enemy ground fire. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Murrell reflect great, credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
