Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Sergeant Brian W. Murray for heroism while participating in aerial flight as Flight Engineer of a Jolly Green rescue helicopter in Southeast Asia on 6 October 1969. On that date, Sergeant Murray voluntarily penetrated an area of known intense hostile activity in a valiant attempt to rescue eight downed Air Force crewmembers from the midst of converging hostile ground forces. Despite intense and accurately directed ground fire, he tenaciously manned his exposed crew position providing suppressive fire for his vulnerable helicopter until, extensively damaged by the hostile fire, it was forced to withdraw. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Murray reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
