The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Sergeant Richard T. Murray. Sergeant Murray distinguished himself by heroism while participating in aerial flight as an AC-130 gunship Illuminator Operator over Southeast Asia on 14 February 1970. On that date, Sergeant Murray, while flying a night armed reconnaissance mission over the hostile supply trails leading to South Vietnamese cities, displayed the highest possible degree of skill, courage, persistence, and unwillingness to accept defeat in directing a highly complex weapons system to bring about unprecedented destruction to the hostile force. His efforts directly contributed to the destruction of 43 trucks, the damaging of 2 others, the ignition of 17 small secondary fires, and the creation of 66 secondary explosions, 4 of them being large, sustained, and believed to be ammunition and fuel storage area. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Murray reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
