Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross posthumously to Captain Joseph P. Murphy, United States Marine Corps, for heroism and extraordinary achievement in aerial flight while serving as a Pilot of an EF-10B aircraft with Marine Composite Reconnaissance Squadron ONE on 13 December 1966. Captain Murphy participated in an electronic countermeasure mission in support of a large United States Navy airstrike in North Vietnam. Despite adverse weather in the target area and harassment by enemy aircraft alerts and surface-to-air missile sightings, he courageously remained on station providing critical support until all friendly aircraft departed the target area. His expert airmanship and valiant fighting spirit contributed materially to the mission's success and the enemy's inability to claim any friendly aircraft with their radar controlled systems. By his exceptional aeronautical ability, dauntless courage and unfaltering devotion to duty, Captain Murphy reflected great credit upon himself and the Marine Corps and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
