Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Don B. Munson for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Major Munson distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 17 May 1968, while serving as Operations Officer of the 2d Battalion, 7th Cavalry during a combat mission near Camp Evans, Republic of Vietnam. When ground forces came under attack while being extracted and several soldiers were left stranded in the pickup zone, Major Munson accompanied the command and control helicopter as it descended through the intense enemy fire. Completely exposed to the heavy enemy ground fire, Major Munson was instrumental in the successful extraction of the stranded personnel. His display of personal bravery and devotion to duty is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
